Paper + Cups Cafe

ARchitecture
branding

Manila Bulletin is one of the oldest broadsheet media companies in the Philippines with a 120 year legacy of excellent journalism.

Our team at PINO transformed their lobby into a multipurpose space called Paper + Cup,  which mostly acts as a cafe. The cafe restaurant was designed by PINO to represent not only an independent entity, but also a brand extension of Manila Bulletin as a whole.

The Identity

Our team designed a logo that highlights how a sheet of paper and a coffee cup both take a round, cylindrical form. The paper is rolled to mimic a coffee cup, while the layering on top resembles whipped cream.

Application

The collaterals feature clean and minimal elements cascaded from the logo. Directly inspired by the simplicity of the identity, and the neutrality of the color palette, each application reflects Paper + Cup's aesthetic and values.

The menu is placed on a clipboard to fit with the sustainable industrial environment. Instead of the usual clip, a metal rod is used to hold the menu, presenting a more sleek and unique board. The menu is also presented on a simple card, creating a clean and easy-to-read menu.

Uniform

The uniform our team imagined follows news journalists and reporters’ attire from the early 1900’s. A fedora hat is inserted with a sheet of paper saying “press.” A long sleeve polo is layered with a gray vest and khaki pants or skirt. Brown shoes and an apron finish up the look, and a notepad and pen will always be on-hand.

Collage Wall

Our design of the collage wall utilizes familiar sights of people and buildings incorporated into the newspaper theme. These silhouettes are filled with clippings of images and text, bridging the gap between daily life and news.
